Shift Register Demo

A board for beginner hand-soldering workshops.

• ~80 solder points to complete. Takes ~30 minutes to assemble and test for an experienced hand.
• LEDs and resistors can be either through-hole or SMT, for progressive difficulty.
• Large pads, to build confidence.
• You can still see something moving after only soldering the 30 points marked with an arrow.
• Power with anything between 2 and 6V.
• Fun and mildly challenging. 
  • The boards can be chained together  to make a long string (set the switch to off~chain to carry-over the signal from one board to the next).
• The 74HC595 can be mounted on two DIP-8 sockets, making it more tolerant to over-heating.
• The capacitor eliminates the rebounds from the clock button
• Open-ended:
  • teaches about shift registers without needing to go through the theory
  • can be controlled by a microcontoller as part of a follow-up workshop
